Heather Schwartz

These tiny portraits by Germany-based artist Heather Schwartz are masterpieces in their own right. As artists do though, she took her idea and pushed it further by arranging them into a tiny art gallery show called “Smiling with Your Eyes” for these figurines. Each of her paintings measures a mere 3” x 3” and has even been “framed.” Heather asked her friends (via social media) to send her photos of themselves in masks with “happy eyes.” These portraits raise the question of how one can communicate happiness and a kind demeanor while wearing a protective face covering. The addition of the toys adds a playful spin on an otherwise serious subject. Children often role play with toys in this way to work out social issues and may find this tiny exhibition compelling as a result.
